Instead you can get of the ship and right away you will see many booths and companies offer a bus ride to the glacier for $8 or so (june 2012) – this makes the trip so much cheaper and while there you get to see this glacier and the waterfalls.

This is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world, this is a remote area and permit require to hike there (to obtain a permit please read this)
only 20 people allowed per day.

The hike itself is not an easy one but defiantly not hard and anyone in reasonable shape can do it, its a 6 miles hike roundtrip but it is hiking in the desert so you must carry a lot of water, wear light clothes and a hat and a lot of sun block.

It is an unmarked hike but you will get a photo guide once you win a permit from the visitor center (@Kanab, UT), we used a gps app on our iphone which tracked our way in and we hiked back out the same way.

the place is amazing and really worth all the efforts of trying to get a permit and hiking in the sun.

While visiting Moab, UT you ill mainly visit Arches national park and Canyonlands NP but there is other places to visit out of the national parks as well, one of these places is Corona arch.

The hike to Corona arch is pretty short (about 3 miles round trip) and its easy so anyone can do it (there is some uneven parts and a ladder to climb (short one) but most of the trail is flat)

when arriving to Corona arch be sure to also take a look at the Bowtie arch right before arriving to Corona. there is an option to get up the arch and jump off it (companies in Moab offer this), or, like us, you can just look at other people who do it.

getting to the trailhead: drive on 191 south and turn right onto 279, drive few miles till you see the trailhead parking.

During our trip in Utah we stayed at the Desert hills B&B for 3 nights and it was just great. Anna and Vic are great hosts and we felt at home right away, room was big enough and breakfasts were amazing. The hot tub outside was the right place to spend some evening time after long hikes.
You have everything you need there, other than the hot tub you have internet and tv room, kitchen access, with snacks, cookies and sodas, phone if you need it and the backyard to sit or have something to eat.

Highly recommended.

While in Alaska you will probably see some bears (in Denali NP, or wherever) but they will be a bit far from you, if you want to try a closer encounter you should try one of the bear viewing tours available, these tours usually include a flight (helicopter , small plane or water plane) to a remote location and some hours hiking there.
This activity is not cheap (450-700usd PP) but it is a unique experience – one thing i would recommend is having this trip at the end of the trip as possible, since you may see enough bears even from close and then you can really save the money (we saw some bears walking on the road a week later in Yukon)
